I saw designer Alvin Edward in one of the great bookstores in the D.C. area, Politics and Prose. He had understated style and a kind sensibility about him with a certain air of an artist. I like seeing that in a photo subject because in general I’m pretty terrified when I approach strangers to make their portraits. And if they are kind but don’t want their photo taken they let me down in a gentle way. My instincts were correct, and instead of turning me down he gladly allowed me to photograph him. Someday I would like to take more time with him in his design studio and ask him a ton of questions while photographing him in his natural environment.
